What a meandering, twisty, and disturbing read.
After You Fell by J.S. Lark was rather slow-paced yet a wickedly addictive journey of 400 pages. It didn’t loosen its hold of my heart till the end once I started reading.

This is, in short, a story of obsession that is extreme and unsettling.
Helen, the protagonist of the story has just gone through a heart transplant and she “senses” the spirit of the previous owner of “the heart” that she is bestowed upon as soon as she wakes up in a hospital bed. Combined with her bipolar disorder, her innocuous exploration into finding the owner of “the heart” develops into something more, so much more…

I enjoyed reading this dark, oppressive, and disturbing read the entire time.
The writing has got a very quiet undertone yet is strong and is quite hypnotic, it effortlessly flew over the pages narrating a dangerous path that Helen falls onto.

Speaking of Helen… Helen, oh, Helen. I honestly don’t know what to make of her but I absolutely loved and savored the bottomless depression she develops and her denial of it.

Told in first person, this book follows Helen’s thoughts and feelings – every single one – and we witness how she develops a very extreme and unhealthy obsession towards Alex Lovett’s children. First Helen thinks it’s Louise, whom Helen is convinced to be the previous owner of the heart, making her do it. Louise is urging Helen to protect the Lovett children from the evil hands of Alex, but as time goes on, Helen finds herself emotionally attached to the children to the extent that she thinks the children her own. Hers. Helen’s life starts to revolve around the Lovett children, doing everything in her power to make the children hers.
I forged through the book with a huge frown on my face, feeling disturbed, repulsed, and disgusted. That said though, those were not the only emotions I went through while reading this book. I was elated and clapped my hands when Helen was happy and content. Just as the story, my thoughts toward Helen meandered so much like a pendulum going back and forth, left to right and I put it down to the author’s prowess in getting the readers engaged. I could not stop reading it until I find out what would become of Helen and how she, Alex, and the Lovett children.

While I thought the overall story progression was rather slow, but the mixture of side stories and the emotional engagement (as I mentioned above) kept me going. Just as much Helen wanted to see if she’s going to lose the children, I wanted to know where the story lands in the end.

The twist in the end literally threw me for a loop. I never saw it coming and I must say the surprise was twofold of what I would have expected. Oh, wow. I never thought I would end up there…

After You Fell by J.S. Lark is a wickedly dark, gloomy yet a glorious read with a surprising twist in the end.

4.5 pancakes go to this book and I thank the author and the publisher for generously providing me with a copy in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.
