Review: A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena

In this neighborhood, danger lies close to home. A domestic thriller packed full of secrets, and a twisty story that never stops—from the bestselling author of The Couple Next Door

He looks at her, concerned. “How do you feel?” She wants to say, Terrified. Instead, she says, with a faint smile, “Glad to be home.”

Karen and Tom Krupp are happy—they’ve got a lovely home in upstate New York, they’re practically newlyweds, and they have no kids to interrupt their comfortable life together. But one day, Tom returns home to find Karen has vanished—her car’s gone and it seems she left in a rush. She even left her purse—complete with phone and ID—behind.

There’s a knock on the door—the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. She had a car accident, and lost control as she sped through the worst part of town.

The accident has left Karen with a concussion and a few scrapes. Still, she’s mostly okay—except that she can’t remember what she was doing or where she was when she crashed. The cops think her memory loss is highly convenient, and they suspect she was up to no good.

Karen returns home with Tom, determined to heal and move on with her life. Then she realizes something’s been moved. Something’s not quite right. Someone’s been in her house. And the police won’t stop asking questions.

Because in this house, everyone’s a stranger. Everyone has something they’d rather keep hidden. Something they might even kill to keep quiet. (Goodreads)

Wow. Just WOW. I heard this is a fast read, but I didn’t expect this to be this fast-paced, a roller coaster kind of read!!
I think a short and sweet review will totally do for this book because I truly believe you should dive right into this book blindly, knowing only the bare minimum and see how this twisty suspense/mystery book unfolds.

As I said earlier, this book reads fast and the gravity this book possesses is far stronger than I anticipated. Once I started listening to this audiobook, I literally couldn’t stop. Not only is this book a thrilling read with a well-contemplated plot, this book is also quite emotionally charged in my eyes. None of the characters is really likable, yet I found my emotions disturbingly agitated and stirred by the characters’ acts and deeds, I was even disgusted with one of the characters, finding her utterly and sickeningly delusional.
It sometimes happens to me that I cannot help scoffing or laughing my head off when I feel so disgusted and this book put me exactly in that state. It got me so invested in the story that I felt as though I were watching a slapstick farce; utterly disturbing yet addictive to the extent I craved for more. This was totally unexpected and I tip my hat to the author for messing with my emotions.

The title is also clever and the plot is really twisty-turny down to the very last minute. The well depicted police procedurals (in other words, relentless detectives) and the ill-intensioned ruses between the two women contributed to making this book an exciting read, amping up the tension and suspense towards the end. It had me guessing whom to believe, and whether they are telling the truth or not. Boy, was this glorious!

My only issue was the verdict of the investigation; could that be even possible?? I wanted justice to prevail!!

Overall, this is a great suspense with lots of ingredients rolled into one; obsession, doubt, delusion, envy, and so many more.
I highly recommend diving into this book blindly.

And beware; women can be devious – Are sure you know who she really is?

My Rating: ★★★★

  1. This book sounds so good! Where did you find such a fantastically exciting book? Now, you have me hooked and I want to read this badly. I also enjoyed your review as you did not give away too much. The only thing I wish you revealed was the ending. I need to pick this book up soon or I will go crazy from the distance I have created from a great sounding book. I hope you enjoy this author’s other works and have a great week!

    1. Thank you, Nicole! I had heard of this book here and there in the blogging community (I totally forgot exactly where it was) and I bought the audiobook a couple of weeks ago.
I think this is one of those books where you don’t want to know much about before you start reading it… knowing a lot about the synopsis could ruin your experience !
Thank you so much for sweet words, hope you have a wonderful week, too!

      1. You’re welcome! She’s a great author! Have you read The Couple Next Door? It’s really fast paced too and fun! I think I liked A Stranger in the House better, but I definitely recommend both!! It’s great to find a good audiobook! I’ve got 2 credits, but I can’t decide what to use them on…😂 I’m listening to The Hate U Give now, and it’s awesome on audiobook, but I haven’t had as much time to listen as I want.

        1. Oh, I have had my eye on The Couple Next Door but haven’t read it yet. But I will!!
I have 2 credits too but likewise you, I just can’t decide what to spend those credits on!!

          1. You should like it! The same detective in A Stranger in Our House is in it..I can’t remember his name! But yeah, he is! But she’s not writing it as a series, he’s just the detective, lol!!

At least I’m not the only one, lol. I have so many I haven’t listened to yet that I hate to get more. I want something really good though when I do!

              1. Isn’t that funny? It took me a bit to realize it and then I was like wait a minute….and I looked it up to make sure I was right, lol. How do you like The Girl Before? I enjoyed it. It was another crazy and fast paced book, but I think Lapena is the better author. I just downloaded an ARC of Delaney’s new book coming out in July; I hope it’s good too! 😊
