TAG: Reader Confession Tag

Hello, everybody! It’s been a while since I did tags, but I finally got around to catching up with tags! (Slowly though…)

Today, I’m doing the Reader Confession Tag that my lovely and amazing blogger, Priyasha tagged me about a month ago. Sorry, Priyasha for taking me so long to do this! But if you haven’t already, please go check out her cute, amusing blog!!

Without further ado, let’s dive into the tag 🙂

Have you ever damaged a book?
Never. Well, to be 100% honest, yes, I have. But it wasn’t intentionally, it was purely accidental. If you have known me, you’ll know how fastidious – even paranoid about my book conditions. I hate breaking the spine, dog-earring, annotating directly on pages is BEYOND MY COMPREHENSION. I basically want my books to be in pristine condition.
That said though, about ten months ago, while I was reading Nix by Nathan Hill, I inadvertently damaged it. It happened while I was on my way back home from work. I put the book on the passenger’s seat on top of the cardboard box I happened to carry around. The car in front of me put the brakes on so suddenly and the book slipped off the box and DROPPED onto the center console (is that what it’s called???  the thing that’s between the driver’s seat and the passenger seat which even comes with drink holders). I immediately checked the extent of the damage when I stopped at the traffic light and found out there was a huge, HUGE crease running on the front cover… I WAS SHATTERED.  I was soooo shocked and literally felt disconsolate. I’m not even joking!
Again, I couldn’t stand having to see how damaged my book was, I ended up throwing it away and buying a hardback copy instead lol

So, the long-winded answer is, ABSOLUTELY NOT, in normal circumstances.

Have you ever damaged a borrowed book?
Again, ABSOLUTELY NOT. At least as an adult reader, never. But if that counts what happened when I was little… I spilled my orange juice over a manga which my sister had borrowed from her friend and… you can guess what happened when my sister found that out 😦

How long does it take you to read a book?
I am a slow reader. It totally depends on the page count, genre or the writing style, (for instance, Classics usually takes longer than contemporaries), maybe 1 book a week on average. When I’m on a roll, then I might be able to down 2 books a week 🙂

What are you currently reading?

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Oh, my gosh. I freaking love this book!!! I never imagined this book to be so emotional and inspirational. I could imagine the society when the book was written was totally different from ours and there must have been a lot of gender discriminations and regulations going on (I just learned women were not allowed to write novels back then so Charlotte Bronte and female authors published their books under male names) and I was deeply inspired how ahead of her time Charlotte Bronte was on depicting an independent woman like Jane Eyre. I’m currently on page 464 and still got about 200 pages to go. But I’m really loving it!!

Books that you haven’t finished?
There are actually some:

As for Coraline and Greyhound, I’ll probably pick them up again at some point, but as for the rest especially A French Girl in New York, I know I never will. It’s too saccharine and sweet for my liking. It actually made me cringe lol

Hyped/ Popular books you didn’t like?

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. That was my very first John Green book and I did appreciate it, but it didn’t hit me as strongly as I had imagined. I read it about a year ago and I might have missed out some things that I ought to have caught, so I don’t particularly like the book at this point, but I might give this book a second chance and see how I think about it. (Since I love the cover.)

Is there a book you wouldn’t tell anyone you were reading?

Fifty Shades Trilogy. I read Fifty Shades of Grey at this time last year and had to seclude myself in a car to read it during lunch time lol

How many books do you own?
I have no idea!! But I have about 130 physical books on my bookshelves and about 200 on my Kindle…

Are you a fast reader or a slow reader?
Slow reader. Definitely. I wish I could fly through a book as fast as you can, guys!!  It’s quite a rarity for me to finish a book in one day let alone in one sitting!!!

Do you like to buddy read?
Buddy-reading sounds absolutely fun and actually enriches your reading experience, but being a slow reader, I always feel guilty for being slow and holding others up 😦

Do you read better in your head or out loud?
In my head. I rarely read books out loud.

If you were only allowed to own one book, what would it be and why?
How could I narrow down to only one book???!! This is torture!! But let’s see… (racking my brain) Nope. I could never do this. No matter how much I love the book, I would get bored. I need to own as many books as I possibly can.

This is such a fan tag and I want to hear your confession as a reader, so I will tag anybody who wants to participate!!
Consider yourself being tagged and just play along 🙂

Hope you enjoyed reading my confessions and let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Thank you for dropping by as always, and I’ll talk to you in my next post!

I ‘damage’ books all the time…I doggy ear pages. I annotate…I’d better stop, people are probably crying right now…but I would NEVER do that to a borrowed book! Only to my own books and most of these are second hand anyway, so I already buy them damaged.

Thank you, Lisa for commenting!! Ahaha, that’s totally fine you damage your books. We all treat our books differently and it’s just me being paranoid lol Plus, you do not damage borrowed books, that’s fair enough!

I don’t purposefully damage my books anymore. I used to doggy ear books but now I use book marks and I also have several books where the spine has been messed up. I don’t know how to keep that from happening though. When I first read Fifty Shades I took it to work with me and read it. I didn’t care if people saw me reading it however one day one of my bosses had asked me what it was about and I was like umm I’m not really sure. I know it’s a romance but other than that I don’t know much. Which was the truth really cause I hadn’t read it yet but I did know a little bit more about it obviously. Lol!!

Oh my god, I read Fifty Shades of Grey 5 years ago and I had just met my boyfriend and we were not together or anything and all he knew about me is that I was bookish… so he asked what I was reading and I went MUTE. He laughed at my embarrassment and was about to say “it’s not as bad as Fifty Shades” when I blurted “Fifty Shades” hahahahaha it was awkward as hell and I’m not good with lying… so well. I totally understand you hiding to read it!!

I’m so far behind in Jane Eyre!! I like reading it slowly to really appreciate the writing etc, but now your comments on it made me want to read it a little faster!

Great post as usual, Noriko ❤ ❤

Thanks, Naty! OMG, the episode with your boyfriend is soooo cute and funny!! It must have been awkward though!! But it was not as popular as it is now 5 years ago, but I read it last year and sure, almost everybody knows what Fifty shades of grey is like thanks to the movie lol
      Anyways, thanks for commenting 🙂

Was so embarrasing, oh my god. But I do wish we weren’t so shy about it, I mean – there’s no big deal! Sure it’s heavily sexual but it’s just a book… nothing to be embarrassed for.

I look so much forward to your review on Jane Eyre!!! 😀

Awesome detailed answers, Noriko. I have serious issues with book damage, lol! Same here with Fifty Shades. I wouldn’t even check it out from the library, haha! 🤣

I always thought you were a pretty fast reader. I know things have slowed down for me a lot and I hope to complete my challenge. Just so busy. Have a good evening. 🖤

Thanks, Mischenko ❤ Oh, I would never check that out from he library either!! lol

No, I'm not a fast reader at all, it's just I do NOTHING BUT reading (I don't watch movies/Tv shows much), so it seems like I read fast but I actually don't lol

Even I’m not big fan of The Fault in Our Stars. It was good but not that much and major point was, I didn’t feel chemistry between characters and so it failed to connect with me emotionally. Even I’m slow reader. I can read 1 or 2 book a week depending on Pg no. Nice answers! 🙂
